THE INSURNO GUIDEBOOK

Understanding third-party car insurance

Third-party motor insurance addresses specified legal liability to other people. It is not cover for damage to your own car. IRDAI explains that third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles used on public roads in India.

Check what you already have

Read your current schedule before requesting a replacement quotation. Do not assume that every section of a motor policy ends on the same date. Ask the insurer to explain anything that is unclear.

Questions for your quotation

  • Which coverage is included, and for what dates?
  • Is this quotation liability-only, or does it include an own-damage component?
  • What additional covers, if any, are shown separately?
  • Where can you read the applicable wording before paying?
  • How do you contact the issuing insurer if details need correcting?

Keep a record

Save the quotation, the issued schedule and the insurer’s contact details together. If a telephone explanation changes your decision, ask for written confirmation of the relevant term.

For broader cover, read the comprehensive insurance introduction. Our preparation checklist can help you organise a callback.
